How to add code Listing to Document like a picture?

Dear professionals,

Since a while, I wonder how to elegantly add Code listings into a Word 2007
document. My goal is to have a Text (Code-)block with an annotation below
like I can do it with a picture and to be able to reference and automatically
build an index out of it. Exactly like doint it with pictures or tables.

This sounds like a usual task, but I couldn't find anything via known search
engines...

It would appreciate your help. Thank you!

Use Paste>Special to paste the code as a picture. You may however first
need to do an ordinary paste into a document and then copy the code from the
document to be able to use Paste>Special and select the Picture format.

I have the same question.

My current approach is to put the code in a table that has only
a single cell. You can color the cell to make the code stand out,
and you can reference the table just as you would a picture.

And you could perhaps use a Table Style to get global
control of formatting, if you can figure out how Table Styles
work (I couldn't, entirely)
