how-to add existing category to tasks pane

I created a new category. How do I add it to the Tasks pane. Where do I go
to see what categories have been selected for the Tasks pane. Thanks for any
help.

The tasks pane doesn't have categories. Individual items have categories.

ok I got it. I created the task (item) first and then assigned a category
to it and now I can see that category. Thanks.
