How to add numbers to paragraph styles?

I want numbered paragraphs eg:

1. First para
No indenting required or wanted.
1.1 First sub-para
No indenting required or wanted
1.1.1 First sub-sub-para
No indenting required or wanted.

I cannot figure out how to do this. When I try to modify the existing
styles, I simply get three independent numbering systems eg

1. First Para
2. Second Para
1.1 Sub para
ie The second level numbers are independent of the first level.

There must be a simple solution - please help!

The following article explains how to set up outline numbered styles:

Note especially the description below “2.3 Numbering for all lower levelsâ€
in the article. You must set your "sub para" which is most likely a Heading 2
to restart numbering after the previous level (level 1).
