how to add page number automatically?

Vince

My goal is just adding simple page number automatically, but it is not as
simple as I thought.

It was not the first time that our fast Lexmark T622 printer pushes all
50-60 pages print-out on the floor, being even worse, there were no page
number on them since I forgot to insert it. I swear I should add auto-page
number to the Word but failed until now:

I tried all the ways I can think of, like followings:

Made a template with page number, save it as normal.dot, failed.

Rename my template as normal.dot, failed.

Delete or move normal.dot to other folder, failed.

Save my template, put it within "start folder "of Word: did not work.

Go to Tools/templates and add-in: add my template to the global template
list and check it as current loaded, did not work.

Go to Tools/templates and add-in/organizer: copy footer and pg number from
my template to normal.dot, although they are within normal.dot now, it did
not work.

Still, I have to choose "new", " from my template" to get a document with
page number at beginning, or insert pg number after it is finished.

I just wonder: am I missing some obvious? Or am I doing something
impossible?

Thanks for any help.

Where did you save that normal.dot? You can't just name a template "normal"
and expect Word to pick it up, it has to be in the User Template folder.

||
|| Save my template, put it within "start folder "of Word: did not work.
||
|| Go to Tools/templates and add-in: add my template to the global template

The start up folder is not for placing templates from which you intend to
create documents. Normally, you place template that contain stuff you want
accessible to all documents while working in Word.

||
|| Go to Tools/templates and add-in/organizer: copy footer and pg number
from
|| my template to normal.dot, although they are within normal.dot now, it

|| not work.
||

You cannot copy a footer (at least, not with my Word version) from the
organizer.... What you did was copy an AutoText, or a style perhaps...?

If all you want is to make sure that ALL standard documetns created when
opening Word contain a page number in the footer, then you are on the right
track, but you are having troubles somewhere along the line.
From Tools > Options > File Locations, find out what is the User Template
folder (The third one in the list);
Close Word;
Go to that folder using Windows Explorer;
Locate the actual "normal.dot" used by Word;
Open it (do not double click on it, right click and select "Open" from the
contextual menu);
Modify it as you want;
When you are done, create a back up copy in case your normal.dot gets
corrupted, as is often the case.

That should do it.

||
|| Thanks for any help.

Note, however, that this solution will put a page number on labels (and also
mess up the alignment of the labels sheets).
