How to apply Fix for update error

S

Steve R

numerous people have posted the problem with opening or saving files in
office applications like Word, Excel after applying Microsoft security patch
KB908531

Microsoft posted these instructions. I tried them but cannot understand step
6. How does one actually enter a data value of "1" ? See step 6 - Do you
right click on it or what? If I right click on that large entry in step 5 I
just get choices like binary data etc. which doesn't make sense. How do you
actually do it? Is it actually just showing a value of "1"
Thanks
1. Log on to the computer with an account with administrator privileges.
2. Click the Start button and then click Run.
3. Type Regedit and then click OK.
4. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached
5. Right-click "Cached", point to New, click "DWORD Value", and then enter:
{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
0x401

6. Set the Data of this value to 1
7. Close the Registry Editor.

right click on the long value that you just entered and then change the value
to 1.

however, i have done this and rebooted and still i cannot open/save/save as
files in word/access/powerpoint.

This is ridiculous!!!!!

I hope we get a resolution soon. I have 3 projects due in school and cannot
put up with this b---t.

Do I need to do this? I have followed the instructions given here and
uninstalled the update (which solved the problem--thanks!!) but I'm wondering
if I can just leave it at that. When the little yellow shield came up saying
that the offending update was ready to be installed, I clicked no and asked
not to be reminded of that one again. So do I need to take further steps?
Even the simpler explanation given below of what to do sounds quite
complicated.

If you don't install the update, you are at risk.
What is complicated?

You do not know how to unzip a zip file with Winzip or your built-in unzip
application?
You do not know how to right click the file and select confirm, then click
to confirm when asked?

Is that what you're asking?

Alan,
Thanks for the "zip" file. I did it and it worked; I was able to open a file
in Word 2003. Just a comment from a not-too-knowledgeable user, I previously
tried the resolution proposed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165. When
I got to No. 6 ("Set the Data of this value to 1"), things became confused. I
right-clicked on the new Registry value I had just entered but I was not sure
where to put the "1" (there were already a few "0". It might be a good idea
to clarify this, since messing up a registry can bring many more problems.
Thanks again.

Yeah, I don't know what "unzip" means or "extract the .reg file to a folder."
I make a point of not fooling around with things on my computer when I don't
understand what I'm doing because I'm liable to screw it all up.

I tried clicking the link and then clicking "open" (thinking that maybe
"open" means the same thing as "unzip") but then it displays a type of file
I've never seen before in a numbered folder and I don't understand what/where
either of them are, so I stopped before I did something wrong.
