How to autoincrement a number in each row of a column?

T

Tom

In the first column of a table I would like to see it look as follows:

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
etc.

I'm using Word 2000 SR-1. I've seen it done in other Word documents
where the text is repeated and the number is automatically incremented
if a new row is entered at the bottom, or the numbers are recalculated
if rows are deleted or inserted in the middle of the table. I can't
find anything in the Help files as to how to do this. I'm probably
just using the wrong search words (using increment, autoincrement
basically).

If it's an Autoformat feature, I normally have Autoformat off so I
tried playing around with that a little but still couldn't get it to
work. Any help appreciated!

Thanks,
Tom

P.S. I've got a lot of existing documents with this format, so I
would also like to know if it can be applied retroactively.

Hi Tom,

Create a numbered style. In the style's number format, Type "Step " in front
of the little greyed out 1 that signifies the automatic number (From the
"Customize" button in the "Bullets & Numbering" dialog).
Assign this style to the cell that will contain Step 1. Place the cursor at
the end of the row (just outside the right edge) and hit enter to add a new
row. The new row should have Step 2 in the proper cell.

Cheers!
