how to backup outlook messages

I am trying to help a friend save his outlook messages
to a flash (thumb) drive. (To make this more difficult,
we are separated by several hundred miles.) His mail
agent appears to be
X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3138
He thinks his messages are somewhere below
C:\Documents and Settings\owner\local
but he cannot access local.

Q1:Should I tell him how to change permissions?
Q2:Is that where his messages are located?
Q3:Maybe he should use Microsoft backup? Does Microsoft
backup have control fine enough to specify messages?

That's not Outlook, that's Outlook Express, a completely different program.

He thinks his messages are somewhere below

He can if he enables it. Open Windows Explorer, click Tools>Folder Options.
Select the View tab and check the radio button labeled "Show hidden files and
folders".

That's Outlook Express, which has nothing in common with Microsoft
Office Outlook.

The messages are inside the "identities" folder followed by a GUID {LONG
ALPHANUMERIC STRING}. You can move them to a more manageable location by
using Outlook Express.

I've just fired up msimn.exe for you to remember where these settings are.

Here you go:

Tools -> Options -> Maintenance
Then click on Store folder.

You will see a location like C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{7EA06E66-7931-4E64-9DF0-61B8047A89B4}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

If you simply paste that whole string into Start -> Run dialog, it will
probably open just fine. You may need to add an extra backslash after
Express.

If you click on "Change", you can move these somewhere more convenient,
such as inside the "My Documents" folder structure.
