My boss and I are working in visio, and the shapes box is not on his screen,
nor does he have the option to get it from View menu. I have it but the
icons are gone, and when I right click and select icons and details, nothing
happens. Please advise. Thank you

You have 2 different problems here:
1. By "shapes box" you mean the stencil containing the shapes. Which
stencil you need depends upon what you are drawing. Assuming you and
your boss are both working on the same drawing type, look at the name
of the stencil you have open, then on his Visio go to menu
File -> (Stencils/Stencils depending on your version of Visio [1] )
and choose the appropriate stencil.

[1] Why do things like this keep changing - it makes it so difficult
to give instructions. Ok, Stencils may or may not have been the best
choice originally but the repercussions of changing it to Shapes is
far, far worse, especially as there is already a Shape menu.
My 2p.

2. Don't know. I can't reproduce the problem.
But try this. Go to menu
Options and in the section View or Advanced (as per [1] above) ensure
the stencil spacing values are set to non zero values.
