How To Build A Large Document

Hi there,

Basically I would like to build a large book-style document. But I run
into several problems that I can't solve. My doc would look like this

I. About the book
II. About the author
Lesson 1: ...
- 1. ...
- 2. ...
Lesson 2: ...
- 1. ...
- 2. ...
Lesson 3: ...
- 1. ...
- 2. ...
Appendix A: ...
- 1. ...
- 2. ...
Appendix B: ...
- 1. ...
- 2. ...

OR

INTRODUCTION
-I. About the book
-II. About the author
LESSONS
-Lesson 1: ...
-- 1. ...
-- 2. ...
-Lesson 2: ...
-- 1. ...
-- 2. ...
-Lesson 3: ...
-- 1. ...
-- 2. ...
APPENDIX
-Appendix A: ...
-- 1. ...
-- 2. ...
-Appendix B: ...
-- 1. ...
-- 2. ...

Level 1 = no dash
Level 2 = 1 dash
Level 3 = 2 dashes

Actually I don't care which system I use, but I ran into difficulties.

How do I accomplsh the above?
Should I use a master document?
Do I need to create my own styles?
