How to cancel "Microsoft Office Outlook is sychronizing folders"

There is a message on the taskbar which says "Microsoft Office Outlook is
sychronizing folders". How do I stop this? It is slowing down my computer.
The Windows Task Manager shows high usage (150,000 K) in memory usage under
"Processes" beside Outlook.
