How to cancel task in Microsoft Project without deletion it ?

Dears
I need to cancel a task in Microsoft Project file but without deleting it.
what is the best way to do this?

Trevor's response is correct for Project 2007 and earlier. Project 2010
includes a new feature which allows inactivating tasks which keeps them
visible but does not include them in the regular schedule calculations.

However, I seem to remember somewhere that this feature will only be available in the Project Pro version.

You are correct, Mike. Inactive tasks are only available in
Professional, not Standard versions
