How to capture an existing website to establish a source?

How can I capture an existing website to use for source files. My plan is
to move their website to IIS and use FrontPage. (this case is unusual in
that I'm helping a widow. We don't know how he originally published the
site, or how he maintained it.)

Considering that IE is able browse the website, I'd be stunned if there
isn't a method to simply capture using HTTP. BTW, I've already attempted to
contact the host. They haven't replied and I don't expect they'll help us
without basic security info.

Any browser should be able to browse a web site, however if you don't have login access, then the
only content you can import is the content that is displayed in a browser, however this will exclude
all server-side scripts, Include page files, and anything that can be seen as linked to in browser
sources, etc.

I would think all the widow would need to do is contact the web host and explain the situation to
get access to the login info.

As it turns out there are at least two tools available for capturing a
website.

httrack
Teleport

I learned out about these in the alt.www.webmaster forum.

Thomas, you're still missing the point. I don't have the credentials or the
publishing tools that the widow's husband used. Therefore, I found
'httrack' did EXACTLY what I needed, and the people in the www.webmaster
forum made an effort to listen to my question and provide me with a useful
suggestion. I'm simply telling you about it because I thought it might be
useful to others and interesting to you.

I recommend httrack to anyone who needs to capture a website using HTTP.

I did not miss your point, however you missed mine, httrack can only grab the content the is sent to
a browser, so if the site has a database, include pages, server-side scripting, etc. it will not be
included.

Also all the widow had to do was contact the web host and provide proof of her husband death and her
rights to the site by marriage, etc. to get legal access to the web site content.

wow. Your reaction stuns me. I'm sorry, but HTTRACK does in fact work for
capturing simple websites. In my opinion that's good news. I thought a
professional like you would be happy to hear about it. Obviously you're
more focused on your imaginative assumptions than on the reality of this
widow's plight... and as I explained earlier, the webhost has been out of
reach for several weeks now, probably going out of business.

Therefore, I was happy to help this widow. I thought you would be happy
about it too.
