How to change column names back to default?

While working on a spreadsheet in Exel v.X I somehow unintentionally
changed the column "names" from the default "A, B, C, D, etc.. to
numbers (1, 2, 3, etc..) and I can't figure out how I did it or how to
get it to change back. I'm dealing with doing custom formulas for cells
and the column numbers are much harder to work with than the letters in
the formulas.

thanks!

Excel/Preferences/General, uncheck the R1C1 Reference Style checkbox.
