How to change data type when importing from Excel to Acess?

J

Jason

I am trying to import an excel spreadsheet into access and keep getting type
conversion errors. The reason is because the first cell in some fields is a
numberic value while following cells are alphanumeric values. Thus, acess
automatically defaults with a numeric data type, when I need a text to be the
data type. However, when going through the import wizard it greys out the
data type and won't let me choose. I have already tried setting the desired
data types in excel and that doens't work. I have also tried creating a
table with the desired data type and importing into that table; however, due
to several null values, it says there is an error importing the data and that
it won't import it at all.

Why is access not letting me change the data type when I'm importing and how
do I change that?

Any help you can provide would be greatful.

Thanks,

It think it is being helpfull.
I insert a false row in the Excel to force the datatype - text, date, etc.

Hello Jason,

Do you use SQL 2000 or 2005? Will you provide a sample Excel file so that I
could reproduce the issue on my side? Please remove "online" from my
displayed email address when you send the file.

I look forward to your reply.

Best Regards,
