How to change newsreading from Outlook Express to Outlook News

G

george

Hi,

When asked "trigger happy" has clicked Yes to make Outlook Express the
default newsreader, but how can I change that to be "Outlook News" as the
deafult.
The IE Programs settings don't give me the (dropdown)option to do this. The
"News" dropdownbox only lists Outlook Express as an option, as opposed to
eg. the e-Mail box, that offers Micosoft Office Outlook, Outlook Express,
Hotmail, MSN Explorer, etc.
Looking at the screen when reading news I get the impression it *is* Outlook
Express that is used for it, but I would like to eliminate the possible user
confusion so the Title bar also reads Microsoft Outlook News, rather than
Outlook Express News.
Tools, Options, General, Default Messaging Programs has the "Make Default"
button grayed out for newsreader.

Anyway, how do I get out of this?

TIA

George

Go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook. However, only the option of
using the News command via Outlook will give you the Outlook News Reader
heading.

Thanks Milly,

Your suggested steps did the trick in this case.
1. changed default newsreader in IE Options
2. rebooted (just to be sure to clean up)
3. started OE and made sure it wasn't default mailclient as well, unchecked
"Always..."
4. rebooted (just to be sure to clean up)
5. reset the "Go" Outlook Menu Bar to contain "News" again
6. Presto, Outlook Newsreader comes up.

My "trigger happy" user is happy now.
(So am I, 'cause I learned a nice workaround trick in the process:
/outnews.)
