How to change the default language to English?

I have the American version of Mac Office 2008. Perhaps because I loaded the new Office Program in France where I am now working, French shows up as the default language for spell check, etc.. I go to tools, select language English (US), I click the default button, which asks if I want to change to English as default language on this and future documents in Normal templates ( I don't know what normal templates is) I click on OK, but French is still default spell check language.
Anyone know how I can choose english as default spell check language? Would appreciate any help, otherwise I have to enable every document manually to work in English.
thanks

The Normal template is the template on which all new documents are based.
By changing the default the way you did, all *new* documents should now be
opening as English (US).

This won¹t help you with legacy documents, however. I¹m afraid you¹ll have
to change them manually as you¹ve been doing.

Someone else may know of a script that will expedite this but I don¹t, so
keep checking back.

Hello Beth Rosengard,
Perhaps you have misunderstood me. I have checked the default English option and still all new word documents open in French. Old and new are in French default language even after I have chosen English. That means, thus far, I am unable to change to English with this default option, choosing English. Could it be that because when I loaded the Software, and it asked me what country I am in and I clicked on France, that it somehow thinks the system must stay default in French. It's hard to believe.
I could re-install the software and just click that I am in the US, but would that work....and would I have to use another key usage just to try to have English as a default language?
Thanks

Is your keyboard layout in French? There's a bug in Word 2008 that
automatically matches your keyboard layout language with the spell check /
AutoCorrect language. There is currently no permanent solution to this
problem, so you'll need to change the language on a per-case basis. To do
this, start typing some text in Word, then click on Edit>Select All (or hit
Cmd+A), go to Tools>Language and choose English, which makes the setting
stick for that particular document. It is very annoying, but Microsoft is
aware of the issue, and who knows, perhaps we might see it get fixed in a
future update.

Dear Michael Bintener,
thanks for the reply. Yes, my keyboard is in French. I certainly hope that Microsoft will address this issue. I also have Office Mac 2004, and never had this problem.
Thanks again
