How to change the default window size?

Hi all,

I have a minor but irritating problem that I can't seem to solve. In
Microsoft Word, I have some toolbars at the top left of the screen,
running across the top of the screen. I have three such toolbars,
stacked, to give a bar that is three toolbars thick. I like them
there.

The problem is that when I open a Word document, it automatically
fills the screen, and the 'close', 'minimise' and 'maximise' buttons
are hidden away behind my toolbars. To get at these buttons, I have to
(1) select the bottom right corner of the document window, (2) drag
this upwards in order to reduce the height of the document window, (3)
now select part of the top of the document window that is visible and
not obscured by the toolbars; (4) drag this downwards so that the top
of the document window now sits snugly below the toolbars at the top
of the screen. I need steps (1) & (2) because, otherwise, the bottom
of the document window would disappear off of the bottom of my
screen.

Now, surely there is a way to set the default size and position of my
Word document windows. But does anyone know what it is?

Many thanks in advance!

The default window size probably isn't actually the problem. The
toolbars are not docked properly. Grab them by the right edge and float
them around until the document window starts jumping out of the way,
then drop them into the "sweet spot". Once they are docked, Word should
sort out the window position so that this doesn't happen. It should
persist through restarts, though you might need to repeat the process in
about a year or so.

Hello [whoever],

Open your Normal template (if you are in Word 2004 it's in [hard disc
name]/Users/[your user name]/Documents/Microsoft User Data), make the
changes you want (you might find it handy to click the green button at top
left), save, and close it.

Simple once you know how, but infuriating until you do! :)

Thanks Daiya, that's fixed it. Superb.

Also, Clive, very useful to know about the Normal template. That could
come in handy in the future!

Cheers!
