how to change the rows of a table to columns

I have about 10 big tables and need to change the columns to be the rows and
the rows to be the columns. Does anyone know if that is possible in Word 97?

No.
But you could you the Paste Special, Transpose function in Excel, which
transposes the row to columns, etc.
Depending on how complex your table is, ie merged cells, nested tables, etc.
this can work reasonably well.
Hope this helps

If you have access to Excel, the easiest way is to copy the table into
Excel, transpose it, and then copy it back into Word.
