How to change the Tracking method of projects

Xiao

Hello,

What is the process to surely change the Tracking method for one or every
projects in Project Server 2007. (% Complete, Work done and remaining work,
Timesheet)
What about tasks already started?
Thanks for your help

Assuming that you are using Project Server 2007, and assuming that the
Project Server administrator has locked down the default method of tracking
progress in Project Server, then no one can change the method of tracking
progress in any project. If your Project Server administrator has not
locked down the default method of tracking progress, then each PM can open a
project and click Tools - Options - Collaborate, select a new method of
tracking progress, click the OK button, and then republish the project.
Please keep in mind that in-progress tasks will continue to use the previous
method of tracking progress until they are done.

Beyond this, do you really want every PM to decide what method of tracking
progress they want to use? Suppose I am a team member in a number of
projects managed by three different PMs, and each of them uses a different
method of tracking progress. That means I need to know how to track
progress all three ways, which would be challenging, frustrating, and leave
lots of room for errors. Personally, I recommend that your Project Server
administrator specify the default method of tracking progress for all
projects...and LOCK it. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot Dale,
I agree completely with you. But the origin of my question was "if the
company's executives demand the administrator to change the Tracking method
for political and/or social (trade unions) motivation".
That may happen...

Are you saying you have to change the default method of tracking for ALL
projects? If that is so, the Project Server administrator can navigate to
Server Settings - Task Settings and Display. From there, he/she can change
the default method of tracking and lock it down, if necessary. Once done,
each PM will have to open EVERY project he/she manages and republish them.

Thanks Dale,

So it's useless that every PM clicks Tools - Options - Collaborate, and
select a new method of tracking progress in each of his/her projet.
Thanks again

If you choose the option under PWA>Server Settings>Task Settings and Display
to "Force project managers to use the progress reporting method specified
above for all projects." then the PMs will not be able to change the
tracking method as you specified below. It would be greyed out for them
