How to change work without affecting duration

I have a number of tasks that have longer durations than work. I've already
set the duration but when I set the work Project tries to change the
duration to match. I presents the option of decreasing task duration or
keeping duration the same while reducing work. The default seems to be
decreasing duration but I want it to default leaving duration the same. Can
this default be changed anywhere? I can manually override it but that's a
lot of work.

Mark the task "fixed duration" before editing the work and Project will hold
duration constant, recalculating the resource assignment percentage instead.
