How to check for Office products being activated

I posted something similar before without any reply, but here's another try
with a different wording...

I have been automating MS Word for years, but recently, I ran into a problem
with expired licenses / invalid activation on Word.

It seems like when my customers who have Word / Office products that were
trial products that expired run this automation, it just crashes..

I would like a way to simply detect if the MS Word application has been
properly activated, so that I can graciously exit if I detect that they
don't have a properly activated product, instead of crashing without giving
them any intelligent reason why it crashed.

I have heard people say that this question might not be something that MS
wants to answer, because they want to keep the license-access limited. I
understand this, and I'm not asking for a way to somehow get the license
number or anything like that. I am simply asking for a programmatical way
to figure out if the Office product is simply legit.

It seems like a reasonable question, which I'm having an extremely difficult
time finding an answer for..
How are other people handling this? Do you know what happens if your
automation program tries to automate a trial version of MS Office that has
expired?

Thank you,
