How to connect Entourage to Exchange (SBS 2003)?

M

Michael Muhlack

Hi,
we´ve got a SBS 2003 LAN wich contains some Win 2K Clients and also some Mac
OS 9.2 Clients.
All worked fine until yesterday.

Yesterday we bought 3 brandnew Mac G5 with OS X 10.3.8 and tryed to connect
them to our LAN.
We found somewhere in the web a Whitepaper wich told us the most of the
things wich are to do.
The File-Exchange seem to work now. We can connect by using SMB or Apple
File Sharing.
Also the integration of the new computers into the domain directly from the
Mac seems to work fine.

But now we´ve got some Problems by using Safari-Browser to browse the
Internet.
Always we´ve got an Error-Message:
403 Forbidden
The URL was blocked by ISA Server (12202)

Also Mac- or other Software-Updates are unable to connect directly to the
Internet.

Browsing the Interenet by using Internet Explorer 5.2 instead works fine.

The other big Problem we have, is that we bought Office 2004 for Mac Os X
wich
includes Entourage. We are now able to receive or to send email, but we are
not able to
browse the public folder of exchange. The Entourage seems to load them, but
sometimes
nothing happens and it´s loading forever. Sometimes it loads them but you
can´t really browse
them, because it very, very slow. And other times it loads them, but after
finishing, doesn´t
show anything.
If we start Entourage we every time earn an error message, that tells that
there isn´t
a certificate...

What can we do?

Best regards,
Michael Muhlack

The first sync can take a long time. Try setting Entourage to only sync
items in a particular category rather than everything.

There are some good links on the Exchange Page that should help you get set
up:

Thanks for your fast response!
That what Entourage trys to sychronize is not very much. Only empty folders
and about 300 Emails (without attachments). We waited for about half an hour
and more, but nothing happend.

I'm not an exchange user so my help is limited. Until someone else with
experience comes along, I suggesting using tcpflow to watch the traffic and
see if there are any clues as to what is happening.

Download tcpflow here:
<http://www2.entropy.ch/download/tcpflow-0.20.dmg.gz>

When you install, you will not see an application, but it will allow you to
use the Terminal to view network traffic.

It's best to test this with just the application that is giving you problems
like Entourage. Quit your browser or any other application that could be
using the network.

Select "Work Offline" in Entourage

After install, open the Terminal and copy/paste in this command

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

These are for Ethernet. Other instructions here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/sniff.html>

Deselect "Work Offline" and click on "send and receive" You'll see every
word of each email and passwords as well as the traffic between computer
and server.

FWIW, I had a similar problem with GoLive's ftp feature and a server. It
quit and hung so many times I lost count. I switched servers and it just
worked. I'm certainly not saying Entourage shouldn't work with your server,
it might just need some tweaking to get it to communicate.

There is traffic between the Server and the client. I can read everything...
My Problem is not that there isn´t any traffic. I can use shared files and
folders
and also browse the www. But the public folders of Entourage do not work for
me...

I don´t think that it could be a problem with the server, because OS9.2 and
also Win2K does work fine over one year in this LAN.
Only the new OsX 10.3.8 does not work correctly. Therefor I think it´s
an OsX Problem...

I use SuperDuper to create a backup OS so I can revert to a previous OS if
an update causes problems. This backup uses my original applications and
documents folder so the size is small.

Thanks for the help, but OsX never worked for me, that´s the reason why I
don´t
have any backup... I only try to have a first primary working instalation.
And I need a connection to Exchange. While Outlook 2001 isn´t working under
10.3.8 I´ll have to make Entourage working... :(
