How to Control Styles in Word for Mac. Preserving Template Formatting

I often write documents with consistent formatting. To ensure uniformity, I've created a blank document template with the desired styles. However, when I paste text copied from another document into this template, it seems to override my styles with those from the copied text. How can I ensure that my template styles always prevail over any pasted content?
