How to convert .lit file?

Hi Jim,

I looked up .lit files since I'm not familiar with that format
(<http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=.lit&Submit3=Go!>) and,
assuming your files are Microsoft .lit files (there are others), they appear
to be eBooks. Is that the case? As far as I can tell, these files can only
be read by Windows machines.

I checked the well-known converter app, MacLink Plus Deluxe
(<http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/mlp_xlators.html>) and I see
no mention of this file format. Unless someone else has other information,
I think your only option is to have someone on a Windows machine save these
files as Rich Text Format (RTF) or even just plain text. That might work.

The eBook readers don't have a Save As function. To convert these .lit
files to a less proprietary format such as .txt, you have to use the
unfortunately named c-lit converter, which runs under Windows or in VPC
if you have that on your Mac. You can download it at

http://www.kyz.uklinux.net/convlit.php

and many other places. I don't know of any easy way to do this on the
Mac side, although there is unix source code which you can download from
the same site, presumably compile, and run in Terminal. I don't know how
to do that myself however; i'd need a pre-compiled binary.

You understand, this is a hack and may violate DRM restrictions. There
is the legal argument that if you properly purchased a .lit file, you
have the right to use it in any way you want. It's not a high-frequency
scenario, however, to purchase an eBook in a format for which you don't
own a player...
