How to convert text to numbers?

I am importing a pile of numbers from Access to Excel. The problem is,
Access puts numbers in with the quote mark. If I copy a column then paste
special -> values, the numbers show, but I still can't do a sum on the
column. I did a TEXT(A1,"#.#") function, but that didn't work either.
Find/replace was a bust as well.

Is there an easy way to get the number really be numbers?
