How to copy Excel chart to Word so I can move it around in Word

N

NonTechie

In Office 2003, I could copy an Excel chart to Word via Powerpoint as an
Enhanced Picture Metafile for both steps. (using Alt>Edit>Paste Special and
select Enhanced Picture Metafile) The result was that I could move the chart
around in Word and place it where I wanted. Further the text didn't "bounce
around" when moving the chart. The final chart in Word, when selected, had
the eight little round empty circle handles with an additional "rotating"
green handle.

In 2007 I don't know how to get the end result I want, which is to be able
to copy an Excel chart (without the Excel background baggage) to Word and be
able to move it and resize it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure why you went through PowerPoint but...........did you try copying
the chart and then Paste Special in Word?

Yes, I tried copying it direct, but every single option under Paste Special
results in an unmovable chart in Word. (In 2003, if you don't go through
PowerPoint, you get an unmovable chart. I don't know why, but it just is.)

I suspect the issue is the text wrapping. Unless you have changed it, the
default is to insert/paste things as In Line With Text. In order to drag
them around, you have to change the wrapping to, say, Square.

Thank you, Suzanne. What you suggested works. I copy the chart straight-away
from Excel and paste it in Word with plain old copy and paste. Then select
the chart, then Format>Text Wrapping>Square. It wraps the text around the
chart, I can move the chart where I want, and it has the familiar size
adjusting and rotating handles. (well, that's what I call them) I also am
able to have two charts side-by-side, which is good. The text will wrap
around both of them.

Have a nice day. :)

If you don't want to have to change the wrapping every time, and if you have
(IIRC) Word 2002 or above, you can change the default wrapping style on the
Edit tab of Tools | Options. The setting affects Insert and Paste but not
Paste Special.

Thanks again, Suzanne. I changed my default in Word and now know how to go
back and forth if I want to. I am starting to get the hang of the new layout
in 2007. (I also went and changed the default in Word 2003 on my other
laptop.)

You are making my Office 2007 life much easier.

You seem to have found the appropriate setting in Word 2007 (which is a
victory in itself--one of the most difficult parts of learning Word 2007 is
finding where they stuck all the options!), so it looks like you're good to
go.
