How to create a custom toolbar button image?

In Excel on the PC, there was a toolbar button image editor that
allowed you to make your own button images, but I cannot find same on
Mac, only a few dozen pre-ordained choices, none of which I like. Any
work around or way to do it?

MaxXL no longer has the button image editor (XL98 and XL01 did), but
with XLv.X and XL04, button images in MacXL are much more flexible.
Create or copy any image - I use GraphicConverter - then paste the image
onto the button face.

A 20 pixel by 20 pixel image works best, but XL will scale the image, so
you can copy a much larger image and get a decent, though necessarily
distorted, image on your button.

See "Copy an image from a graphics program to a toolbar button or menu
command" in XL Help.
