How to create a small website?

Hi, I am creating a website for a small family company and I am trying to
find out how to go about this.. I have little to none previous experience in
creating website but I have a pretty good technical background and I am
willing to learn a new program. The website would be small and for
informative purposes. Is FrontPage something for me? Other suggestions?

Forget all the canned design programs. It's a waste of time learning
their quirks and bugs. Instead, program directly with HTML and CSS.
With these, when you learn their quirks and cross browser problems the
knowledge will be useful for many years to come.

It is no more difficult learning HTML and CSS than learning the canned
programs. You will also end up with compact, standards compliant code
and gain a better understanding of web programming.

including FrontPage MVPs will say that it is a better approach to learn
HTML, CSS and NOT FrontPage because what you learn can be used anywhere on
the web. However, with a specialised program you have to learn that and if
(when) the program becomes obsolete (FrontPage is in this category) you do
have to relearn a replacement.

I learnt to construct websites this way. I still use FrontPage for
publishing because it has certain advantages , but very rarely do I use it
in design mode

So I think you were just being a helpful person

questions. For someone to simply reside here to try and deter the user away
from FrontPage is counterproductive. Suggesting learning HTML and CSS is
fine to help a user further benefit from using FrontPage.

Thanks for the comments. I started using FrontPage (my web site is
still in this format). After learning about the need for cross
browser compatibility I checked what I had and was very lucky not to
have too many problems. Then I soon discovered that I needed to learn
HTML / CSS anyway (and a small amount of JavaScript).

I have also been very fortunate that I did not use any of the
extensions as my web host has stopped supporting them. (I certainly
do not want to change my wonderful host, not kidding.) I am presently
rewriting my web site using HTML / CSS. I have learned a lot in so
doing and have standards compliant compact code.

I absolutely love Front Page. I find it very easy to work with. Unfortunately
my web provider wants me to move to Publisher as Frontpage is no longer
supported. Ive only worked with Publisher a few days and Im totally
frustrated.

And frustrated you will be. Publisher is the worst ever program to use for
web pages. For printed publications, Publisher is one of the best products
available - for the web it is the worst.

FrontPage has been replaced by Expression Web and MS Office SharePoint
Designer. These are NOT upgrades (though Expression Web does have upgrade
pricing). Some knowledge of HTML and CSS are required to get the best out
of these programs.
Expression Web is aimed at standards compliant web sites, and has limited
support for FrontPage components. Expression Web supports PHP and asp.NET
2.

SharePoint Designer is aimed at SharePoint websites, but has more support
for FrontPage Components. Note that Expression Web does not have a
Navigation View if you use FrontPage navigation components.
SharePoint Designer does not support PHP.

Neither program has any support for VML graphics as produced by FrontPage
and other Office applications (WordArt, ShapeArt, TextBoxes and objects
created using the Drawing toolbar)

FYI, FrontPage extensions are only supported on Windows 2003/2008 servers -
other server types (Unix, Windows 2000) have no support for extensions other

As someonw who used Frontpage from FP97 through all the versions to FP
2003, hated it when MS stopped spporting FP Extensions on Linux
servers, and finally converted to Expression Web, I have to say I
really am happy with Expression Web. And yes, along the way I got
some real skills in HTML and CSS and a little experience wih Java
Script.

I tried to convert a Publisher site to something using Expression Web,
and ended up with a nightmare. Stay away from Publisher. Your host
requiring you to use Publisher means your host is not probably the
best hosting company you could choose.

If Expression seems too complicated, try this freeware program -
Pagebreeze. its at www.Pagebreeze.com. The difference between
Pagebreeze and Expression is like the difference between the 8 color
box of crayons, and the 164 box of colors with the bulit in sharpener.

On the otherhand, the difference between Publisher and and ExWeb is
like dirty motor oil and a 164 color box of crayons. Its like having
your vet perform your brain surgery. Its just wrong. its the wrong
tool, and it writes hideous code.

No... the best thing is expression web 2.0

If you need free however you could try SharePoint Designer 2007

which is now free.. it has some old fp bots and of course sharepoint .. but
you can ignore both those features ... its like expression web 1.0.

As I said Expression Web 2.0 is the best.

If you have to use FP then use FrontPage 2003 withouth any bots (exception
include pages - which are also available in ew 1/2/spd07)
