How to create hyperlinks in Outlook 2007

I have Office Ultimate 2007 and this question is for Outlook 2007 running on
Vista x64 Ultimate.
I am also running IE 7, latest/greatest version

When I copy a URL from IE7 and paste it into an Outlook email message, the
hyperlink is not active. I would like to be able to hit the space bar or
return to activate the hyperlink in the outgoing message; i.e. the way it
works in Word 2007 (with some tweaking was required to enable that
functionality in Word 2007). It is very clunky and slow to have to go to the
insert tab and then click on the hyperlink button over and over (I use a lot
of hyperlinks, so the 30th time in a day it gets frustrating... especially
wen it is not required in Word 2007).

I believe that I am using Word as the email editor, but I can't find the
checkbox for that under Tools|Options|Mail Format...

This is driving me crazy, any help is appreciated. I have searched the
workgroups, helpfiles, etc.

the recipient will see it as "activated" - why would you need to?

Really? I will have to test that.... That is new info for me.
Counter-intuitive when I can't see the link as active.

I generally like to test links to make sure it is the correct one, working
as expected, etc. Sometimes it isn't.

Outlook 2007 has an option to recognize Internet links in a message and turn
that into a clickable link. By default this option is turned on.

If this option inadvertently got turned off (or if you actually prefer to
have it turned off), you can change it in the following location;

Tools-> Options-> Mail Format-> Editor Options-> Proofing-> tab AutoFormat

Here make sure the following options are selected;

In section Replace:
Internet and network paths with hyperlinks
In section Always AutoFormat:
Plain text e-mail documents

I have both of those options checked and hitting the space bar does not pop
it into an active hyperlink (like Word 2007 does).

You are awesome! I have been plagued by this also. You were on the right
track but missed one check box.

On the "AutoFormat as you type" tab,

Under "Replace as you type"

check "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks"

Wow. Thanks for the persistance and insight! Gezz, talk about finding
something 50 layers deep! In the age of the internet, I don't understand why
keeping links active is not a default. I supose it's more of a security
precaution....
