How to create subheadings for repeating field in mail merge direct

I'm sure an older version of word used to allow a subheading to be created
for repeating fields when producing a merged list in mail merge (for instance
summarising data by State). Can anyone direct me to how this is easily done
without resorting to Access?

Actually, no, mail merge has never had any tools for dealing with "one-to-many",
at least not directly.

There are a couple of alternate approaches, one of which you may be recalling
vaguely. See if this article describes what you're thinking of:
