How to cross reference caption(equation) nubmers?

I created caption for each equation in Word 2003. When I try to insert a
cross-reference to the equation number, both equation and number are
inserted. By right, it should be only the number. Can anyone help? Thanks.

If the caption is in the same paragraph with the equation, then this will
happen, since Word considers the whole paragraph to be the caption. To
prevent this, create a borderless two-column table and put the equation in
one cell and the caption in the other.
