How to cross reference detailed paragraph numbers (i.e. 5.6(i)a?

When inserting a reference for a detailed paragraph number (ie 5.6(i)d , I am
unsure what to enter in the dialogue boxes to ensure that the entire
reference comes out as intended. The Help application suggests selecting
"insert to" Paragraph Number (full context).....but how do I actually select
the proper Numbered item? For example, do I select the cross reference for
5.6 first, and then in a separate step select "(i)", and then a third step
select "d". Whevever I try to do cross references for the detailed paragraph
numbers as above, they ultimately revert to "1.1.1d" or the like.

You only need to insert the reference once, to the item you want. The
"Paragraph number (full context)" option creates a "complete"
reference, which includes any higher numbering levels.

For example, to reference "5.6(i)d", you'd do the following: In the
Cross-Reference dialog box, choose "Numbered item" in the "Reference
type" dialog box. In the "For which numbered item" box, click the
appropriate "d" item. Then, at "Insert reference to", click
"Paragraph number (full context)". Click Insert.

Note that cross-references don't update automatically; you'll have to
select the entire document and press F9 (or switch to Print Preview)
to force an update.
