How to Customize X-axis Value Labels in Scatterplots?

I would the x-axis labels to appear only for the x values in the data set. Is there a way of doing that?

To be more specific, my data is plotting percentages in different years and I would like the x-axis to only show labels for the years in the data set. Instead what one gets are evenly spaced year labels, many of which were not years with data!

Now, if I plotted this as a line chart, it would only show the labels for the years I have, but line charts do NOT space the data properly--that is, they show the same gap between 1990 and 1994 as between 1994 and 2006, which is incorrect.

Any and all suggestions, work arounds appreciated.

Of course, I meant to write "I would like x-axis labels to appear only for the x values in the data set." I left out the "like".

I did find a complex work around that requires plotting a dummy series, using + as the data marker, and putting in data value labels below the data points, but there has to be a shorter, simpler way of doing this!
