Thank you so very much for your help - I went in and did as you
instructed and it worked!

I have another question.. I have the software "office mac", which had
me uninstall "test drive" (which was already loaded into the computer
when I bought it). Every time I open word to start something new (or
add to something already created) it doesn't start with a blank
document. When I click on the upper left button on the tool bar (it's
a white sheet with a "plus" sign) the sheet has "dfjkhsdhsdsd" on it.
I know that I was playing around with word when I first got it to see
the different things it could do and don't know what I did or how to
undo it so that the blank sheet doen't have that on there. The top of
the sheet above the margin ruler says "Document 1".

Quit Word.

Locate the "Normal template (from finder use find file type in normal
locate the one(s) associated with Word) throw in Trash. Empty

Open Word there will be a Blank Page with just the cursor blinking.

You will lose any formatting. but you should be back to square one.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

There's no need to trash the Normal template if it's not corrupt (and it may
not be). With Word quit, navigate to Normal (assuming you're in Office
2004, you'll find it in Documents>Microsoft User Data) and open it. Do a
Select All (Cmd>A) and then delete to remove whatever is there. Save and
close it. Now open a blank doc. If it's okay, you're fine. If it's not,
then you *will* have to trash Normal.

On the other hand, if you haven't customized Normal at all, you might as
well just trash it a Phillip suggested.
