How to designate an *.mpp file read only w/password or limit writeaccess to an individual

Is this possible within MS Project Pro or do you have to rely upon
Windows security for the directory it resides in?

Andy:

Earlier this week we talked about putting a password on the file. That's the
best you can do for the file itself. If you want to manage access through
permissions on shared folders, then that's quite doable too.

Hello Andy,

With project it's an all or nothing issue -- either the file is
read-only to all or none. I believe you'll need to work with the
network security approach.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Pardon me for intruding, but I think the answer is....

In MPP, Save As > Tools > General Options > Password protect....?

Andrew:

Yes, we walked through that option in an earlier thread. Now Andy seems to
be rejecting that option and looking for a solution that allows him to
manage access a little more granularly.

Sorry my friends. I thought I might have posted this ? earlier but
could not seem to find the thread. So, the file can be password
protected for write then? I'll take a look at it.

Now, let me explain, this ? re: MPP files is separate and distinct
from the ? I had about setting up a category for the master plan/
subplans stored in the server. That seems to work fine, except I went
and gave all the PMs full access to all the plans (master and sub)
because the predecessor files "could not be found" when they opened
the plans they were responsible for. Let me throw this out...As the
PM, do I NEED full access to the plans that have interproject links
with my tasks or just read only to those?

thanks,
andy

Andy:

As the PM, you need read access to the related plan in order for this scheme
to work. You need write access to the other plan in order to establish the
dependency or change its properties. Some organizations have designated
people for creating cross-project links because it's a feature that can
drive you drink if you don't use it correctly and diligently. For these
situations, consider using deliverables instead.

I thought I would give the Program Manager write access to all , then
each PM gets read access to the ones except theirs. Right now,
everyone has full access. Does read access also mean being able to
open the project in Project Professional? I bet it does. Perhaps
I'll be able to at least lock down the editing of the plan although
they may be able to open it in Project Pro.

Yes and they need read access to resolve the external links, otherwise they
simply won't resolve. Your plan sounds solid.
