How to determine the number of months between 2 periods?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to determine the number of months
between 2 periods? the default day is always 1 for both periods.
such as
1997-10-1 [A1] and 1996-10-1[A2]
then return 12 in cell B1
Does anyone have any suggestions?

=DATEDIF(A1,B1,"m")
