How to disable red wave underlining for vocabulary errors?

C

Camille Petersen

Some of the words in a Word doc are red, curly underlined.
As far as I know this indicates unknown words in the dictionary.

How can I completely disable this kind of underlining?

Red wavy line indicates a spelling error or not in the dictionary (this is
common if you are typing medical, engineering or similar terms not in
everyday writings). You disable the feature by disabling the 'Check Spelling
as you type' from Word Options. But you have to remember to run a spell
check manually when you have finished (F7)! You can add correctly spelt
terms to the dictionary to stop seeing the same word highlighted each time -
but you can also add incorrectly spelt words too, so make sure they are
correct. <g>

You don't mention the version of Word you are using.
For 2003 and prior - Tools, Options, Spelling & Grammar tab, uncheck the
"Check spelling as you type".
For 2007: not to sure exactly where this option is found but it could be
under Review tab, Proofing group.
Personally, I would not do this as this will allow disasterous spellings
within the document and possible distribution to the readers. I would have
this function on, and deal with the occurances of the spelling mistakes,
either correct the spelling or add the "new" word to the dictionary, or
ignore it temporarily for this document if it correctly spelt and you don't
want to add it to the dictionary.
Hope this helps

Hi Camille,

Those red squiggly lines are to show you if you have made any spelling
mistakes.

It is best to keep it on really but if you really want to turn it off in
Microsoft Word 2007 then you need to click the big round office button
within Word in the top left corner.

Once you have done that, click word options > proofing > then under the
heading *When correcting spelling and grammar in Word* uncheck the *check
spelling as you type* box and that will stop the red squiggly lines
appearing.
