how to disable touch pad

I have problems with the cursor all over the page while I type. How do I
disable to touch pad? I went to 'mouse' in the control panel but do not see
an obvious disabling area to check off.

You'll have to check with the laptop manufacturer. Some require a setting in
the BIOS. Others are disabled when you plug in some other form of pointing
device.

On my laptop, I have a tab called "Devices." At the bottom of that,
there is a box that I have checked, "Disable touchpad when USB
pointing device is present."

Evidently these options aren't too easy to find--I'd go through all of
those tabs in the Mouse window, as this is an incredibly annoying
thing to have to live with. I can't blame you for wanting to shut it
off.

One more thing to look for--I just installed an updated driver for my
touchpad, and see that now it has something called "Palm Check." This
is designed to prevent exactly what you are talking about--unintended
movement on the touchpad moving the cursor. In the Touchpad properties
dialog, I found it under Sensitivity>Palm Check settings. There might
be something like this with your touchpad properties/settings.
