how to do a specific count

i have a column that could contain one of three values i.e.

A
B
C
A
A
A
A
A

What I need to do is count one of the specific values i.e. A

ive tried to use COUNT and COUNTA but i cant get them to do it as they want
numbers


any help would be greatly appreciated (im using office XP)
