How to empty the Junk-Mail Folder?

M

Marek

Hope this is not a FAQ!

I have to think about archiving my mails, after two years of use. I am
dreaming of a database where all Emails are archived with all headers,
an the attached files are linked to a separate folder and kept there.
Tipps?

To start, I wanted to empty my Junk-Mail folder. So I am clicking on
it. Already there my poor little PB G4 has had to work hard. In this
folder are meanwhile about 71000 messages. Finally after five Minutes
I am in this folder. I make Apple + A to select all and then Apple +
Backspace to delete all. Now my poor little PB is working and working.
After half an hour I see, that these messages are not deleted but
moved to the Trash-Folder inside of Entourage.

Hello folx of Microsoft! Is this serious? Did I oversee the right way
to achieve this task? After a night of work finally if I find all
messages in the Entourage Trash I have to start over, to delete this
spam finally???

Please help! Thank you all

I suggest removing incoming attachments with one of the "remove attachment"
scripts. They will save, remove and link the saved files to the message, so
you can open the file directly from the message.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/script/fav_scripts.html#favscript17>

<http://scriptbuilders.net/files/saveattachments20041.0.0.html>

Also remove your outgoing attachments with a rule. This is assuming your
outgoing attachments are stored elsewhere on your computer. No need to have
them duplicated and filling up your database.

This is a safe guard to keep you from nuking a message. There are scripts
that nuke message so you don't have to go through this double process.

Download Nuke Messages:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/scripts/Nuke.zip>

I do suggest that you break up those 71,000 messages into smaller segments
to delete. Do a custom arrangement to sort by Sent...collapsed. This will
make it easier to select smaller segments.

I'm curious, what size if your database with all that spam?

Wow! Thank you Diane :)

I was not expecting such a detailed answer! I am impressed! Imagine,
before deleting I dragged the spam folder to my desktop, because I
want to burn all this sh... on CD. Yes, yes that's quite silly to do
so, but one day, I think, these informations could be perhaps of some
interest, to document the dark side of the internet ... Will you
believe me? I have 733 MB in this mbox-file. No CD is coping with such
a size. So I have to split it up with my Shell or with a Perl-Script,
to cut it into pieces of 680 MB and the rest ...

Thank you for your tips about the database archive. I will have a look
into these solutions.

LOL!! I think we need to send you to therapy. <big grin>

I think you'll find Entourage much more responsive once you've trimmed it
down a bit.

Diane,

before I go into your therapy, let me save first this trash-mails ;-)

Could you tell the folx of the development stuff, to find a solution
to this problem. I found it always difficult, to remove things out of
Entourage. And to move the spam first to the trash, to be able to
delete it definitely is unacceptable. Specially considering the spam
amount of some people like me ...
Imagine 71000 mails I have now to move day per day into the trash, to
delete it. This takes one day, probably more!

Thank you again Diane

ps: when is the first session of therapy? Have to know it, to save
quickly my spam before :)

Create a Schedule:

When:
Set the one of the Timed Schedule or "on quit"

Action:
Delete Junk Mail --> from Deleted Items --> older than xx days

You could try adding an additional action:
Run AppleScript --> Nuke

Since you can get some good mail in the Junk folder, set a time that allows
you to check for good mail.

Also set up a rule for 'junk that is from me'

This catches the real spam where it appears the mail is from you and not
mail you send yourself. I like the first example. I haven't met a spammer
yet that uses Entourage for a sending client.

Junk Mail where "From is Me"

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/rules/example/rule012.html>

Keep your Address Book up to date. Mail that is received from contacts in
your Address Book are never marked as spam.

Therapy starts promptly at noon. Be sure to get there early for a good seat.
I always like to sit up front. :)
