How to exit "edit picture" in word

I pasted a clip in emf format from my custom clip art.
When I right-click on the picture and select "edit picture" I see thick
black bars around the picture that allow me to crop (not resize) the
picture. I can't seem to exit this mode. If I select the "drawing
canvas toolbar" I can click on the "scale drawing" button but when I
de-select the picture and go back to it, I'm back in the crop mode.
This is bad because I can't move the picture, the cursor automatically
goes to "select objects" mode. The object behaves differently and I
want it to behave normally. Where is the exit button for the edit
picture mode?
It looks like the picture changed into an object and can't be changed
back....

I'm confused too. It looks like there is some sort of inherent change
that happens to the picture that's undoable.
Usually when you insert a clip and you click on the picture, you get a
thin black border around the picture with resize dots in every corner
and vertice. This is the mode I like.
If you do "edit picture" you get the crop handles but then you can't go
back to the regular mode. You can no longer select the picture as a
picture, it seems.
BTW, ESC just shifts the focus away from the picture, when I click on
it, I get the crop handles again.

Are you closing the "picture toolbar"? That should result in Word having
"object control" again.

Try clicking the crop tool on the Picture toolbar to toggle it off.

Hmmm....looks like you have encountered a minor bug. If the picture is
inserted inline then Edit Picture does not warn you the image will be
converted to a Microsoft Office Drawing Object. However if the image
is floating then the warning will appear.

Since the image was converted there really isn't a way to 'turn off
the edit mode'. You might try using Copy and Edit Paste Special and
try pasting the drawing object as one of the available picture types.
You may need to try them all to see which one looks the best.
