How to find Word version used to create the document?

Hello,

Does anyone know how I can find out, using the automation model, what
version of Word a document was created with?

I can find out what version of Word is running, but not what version
the document was originally created in.

The information is available somewhere as Word 2007 is opening the
file in compatibility mode... so how does it know, and how can I find
out?

Thanks.

What type of file is it? What's the extension?

If it's a .DOC rather than .DOCX file, it's always going to open it in
compatibility mode, no?

Well, that's not strictly true, but it is a rough guide. Word looks at the
file contents (the first four bytes are a file signature) to determine
whether it is a Word 2007 format document, or a Word 97-2003 format
document. If it is a Word 97-2003 document it will open it in compatibility
mode; if it is a Word 2007 document, Word will check a flag in the file,
based on what mode it was in last time it was saved, to decide whether to
open in compatibility mode or not.

It is only Word 2007 format that is different; Word does not treat Word
2002, and Word 2003, files, say, differently.

Thanks for the extra detail, Tony. I figured I'd start with the easy stuff
(extensions) before getting into the gritty bits. <g>
