How to fix amount of time it takes to open or reply to messages?

I have started to have major problems with Outlook. Whenever I open, reply
to, forward or send a message it just sits there like it's frozen for an
average of 5 seconds every time. Then it freezes up other programs that are
currently running. has anyone else had this problem and if so, what did you
do to fix it?
