Clueless in Seattle
This morning I tried to find the menu for changing the way wordwrap
breaks lines (I want it to divide words, instead of breaking lines
between words).
I tried Tools>Options>Edit as a first guess, but found the Edit menu
messed up.
It looks sort of like a picture that has started to slide down out of
its frame; the "frame" in this case being the grey menu that contains
those little white check boxes.
So what I get is the top half of the menu completely blank (grey), and
then half-way down the half empty menu, and pushed over to the right
by about 3/4", the list of of options begins.
But because the contents of the menu has "slid" downward, I only see
half of the list of options. The first item I see is "Typing replaces
selection" and the last item, at the very bottom of the menu is
"Picture editor: Microsoft Word"
I checked the other menus, and, with the exception of "Compatibility,"
thay seem to display ok. But the Compatibility menu suffers from the
same "downward slippage" as the Edit menu.
Do you think there's anyway to correct this mess other than
reinstalling Word from scratch? Or even a complete Office reinstall?
If I must resort to a complete reinstall of either Windows or Office,
then how can I save all my personal configuration settings, templates,
etc.?
And while we're on the topic, where is the menu item to change the way
wordwrap divides lines?

P.S. If you're asking why I still use Word 97; it's because I'm
disabled and on a pension so small it doesn't even cover my food,
rent, medical, etc. so I'm not able to afford the cost of an upgrade.
The Word 97 I'm using was a gift from a friend who worked at MS years
ago. I've signed up to participate in an MS usability study, but so
far I've been rejected twice; first because I was too old, and second
because I wasn't employed But maybe someday they'll come up with
a study for disabled geriatrics and then my prize will be the latest
edition of MS Office
