how to fix"Norton Repair Feature" error message

D

Doctor Vanilla

eWhenever I try to open and/or save email attachments that are files or
documents, I get an error window/message that states "Norton AntiVirus 2005
does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall." I have
to click on OK several times (each time a new, identical error message pops
up) and then the file or document opens. It does this whether I attempt to
open the file/document or save it. If I save it, it does it when I go to
open it later as well. I cannot detect that I have anything of Norton left
to uninstall. (I uninstalled pre-packaged Norton and use my own AV and Spy-
and Ad-ware programs (eTrust AV, Spyware Dr.) after purchasing my system.
Currently running Windows XP (SP 2), Office (Home, currently updated) and IE
(latest version/update) on an eMachines T6003 home desktop pc. When file
opens, it is fine, just get the error msg 4-5x.

I was a LONG time customer of symantec products until recently. Got fed up
with the "fluff-over-function" of the software. That's not to say it doesn't
work, it probably works OK, but at a price (RAM, irritants, etc.)

I have seen this error. You didn't move the AV program folder from where
SYMANTEC put it after you installed, did you?

What I mean is, when you installed, the AV folder was probably under
start-->program files. If you moved it to, say, start-->program files-->
utilities, a program folder that you created on your own, this happens.

I could never get to the bottom of why, but I was able to reproduce this
type of issue at will, and consistently.

COMPLETELY uninstall NAV. Check Symantec on-line knowledge base. You
proably have a few stray registry keys "hanging around". OR, run a good
registry cleaner... that MAY fix it.

Also, scan your add/remove programs list carefully. THere MAY be a stray
symantec utility still hanging out. That program installs an UNBELIEVABLE
amount of mini-apps that don't cluster together in A/R programs.

Ya dun good by getting a different AV/Fireall program. My $$$s are on the
registry key, or "hanging chad" app still in there somewhere.

I say Symantec KB is the place i'd start.
