how to fix the project progress reported by resrouce - MS proejct 2007

Hi

i have Actual work done and work remaining. Resources report the actual work
done and the work remaining to be done on each task enabled. And resrouces
reports their progress by % on task daily basis as they proceed through on
task.

this is interesting that resource complained that you schedule me for this
task for 2 hrs and i finished the task in 1 hr when i submit the progress i
have option to make % > 100% when i do that and click on recalculate it puts
2 hr below as task was for 2 hr. when i put 1 hr and recalculates it puts
50% in progress.

how can i tell my pm that 2 hr task was done in 1 hr & task was completed
100%.

Can some one help pelase.

I would think, marking Actual work done as 1 hr, setting remaining work to
0hr, and recalculating it, before submitting, should show the task as 100%,
but record actual work is 1hr instead of 2hr. If you have saved your
baseline, you could compare with baseline work.

Using hourly work reporting to drive task status is mutually exclusive of
using % complete. If you try to use both together it's like your right hand
going to war with your left hand. No matter what happens, you lose.

Based on this post and your previous post it would seem as though you're
venturing into using Project and Project Server in the enterprise without
understanding the fundamental functions of the scheduling engine in Project
and how to Project to manage projects in general. Using the enterprise tool
effectively requires more than novice-level control of Project. Understand
that this is one of the most common missteps people make when approaching
Project Server. I strongly suggest that you work on this skills deficit by
acquiring these skills yourself or seeking help from others with these
skills.

Hi Gary I am completely disappointed with your answer, and the reason behind
if what you talking is true why Microsoft will keep this option in Project
at all because there is a merit to it?
Not everyone is good at math same as me&you, who can say i am done 0.72
hours done and left ? hours of the work rather good at hmm looks i am done
10% of the work is more easy for some one to say...

so where are you getting this project management phylosphy i dont know, but
the reality is easy to use and flexible system is what we all need and that
is why MS developer has kept this option to report by hour and % open in
collaborative environment.

hope this will lead you to talk to developer directly...

imran.

Imran:

The only way to separate time reporting from %complete (work or duration) is
to use the timesheets to collect time, and use the My Tasks page to report
percent complete and do not import the time from the timesheets. If you want
to track by time, which is a very good practice, you need to teach your
users to change the remaining work value to show that a task finished early
or will finish late. So, for a resource to report 1 hour worked on a 2 hour
task and the task is complete, they would enter 1 hour of actual work and
set the remaining work value to zero. The system calculates the percentage
correctly.
