How to fix Update is unable to check for updates due to Win Instal

How do I correct the problem in which Office Update stops working and gives
the message "Office Update is unable to check for updates" on WinXP Pro,
recently with SP2 added.

I believe that I've started having this problem is due to the last reason
listed by Microsoft in which the Windows Installer's version has changed from
1.0 to 1.1

TIA,

Chris,

From Susan Ramlet's reply to John Martoccio's post "Office Update is
unable to check for updates" (9/27/2004), I learned of this KB article. I
went through all of the steps of the article, but to no avail.

In lima's post "Office Unable to Check for Updates" (9/28/2004),
Microsoft techs say it looks like an issue with SP2.

I don't think that SP2 is the only issue, since this PC had worked fine
with Office Update after I installed SP2 (from the web site download). I
think that the problem was due to the installation of a number of 3rd party
tools. It was after that that Office Update stopped working.

There are at least 2 versions of SP2, the one you can download from the
Microsoft web site and the one on the OEM CD shipped with new PCs. I know
that these 2 react differently. They download different sets of updates at
the Windows Update site and they initially react differently in how they do
their automaic installs.

The SP2 CD that Microsoft can ship you may be a 3rd version. I haven't
tried it yet.

Thanks anyway,

KBrewer,
The article posted was a "troubleshooting" reference from earlier posts (and
application here) as you related to.
We did have some trouble with SP-2 download and Office 2003 SP-1 (Outlook
bcm add-in). Rebooted using the refered article and were successful on a test
machine. New install of Windows SP-2 and our related business software,
Microsoft and not.
"They download different sets of updates at
the Windows Update site and they initially react differently in how they do
their automaic installs."
As with any major Windows SP or version upgrade the machines that run the
best are "clean" with file reloaded and tested backups...
