How to force project not to split a task over multiple days

Some of the tasks in my plan are workshops, e.g with a duration of 1 day and
multiple resources assigned. When levelling, Project keeps splitting the
task over multiple days due to the other tasks assigned to these resources.
e.g project schedules Fred on the workshop task on Monday and Mary to the
workshop task on Friday - I need them both to attend the workshop on the same
day! I want Project to calculate the day when all the resources are free,
not extend the duration of the task. Anyone know how to do this in Project
2000?
Cheers
Dave.

Hi,

I'm VERY sorry to say that Project can't do this, at least not without a
very very lengthy workarount that forces you to completely change your usage
process.

It's been asked for to the labfor several years already..

Hi Dave,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You could try making the workshop priority 1000 (do not level) and select
Priority,Standard and allow splitting, in the Levelling dialog. Personally,
I think it would be simpler to take the workshop off the project and set the
project calendar to non working time for that day.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://www.mvps.org/project/

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

I wrote a macro that works toward this a while back. It might be exactly
what you are looking for but it might get you on your way.

Thanks Mike. I'll have a play with this and let you know the results.

You're simpler suggestion of taking the workshop off the plan will not work
- I cannot make that day a non-working day because I do not have a fixed day
for the workshop. I want MS Project to tell me when to run the workshop based
on all the other constraints and assignments. My problem is exacerabated by
the fact that the project consists of lots of workshop-like tasks - i.e tasks
that (i) require equal contribution from all assigned resources and (ii) must
be of a specified, fixed duration.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to reply.

Thanks
Dave.
