how to format footnotes in the text as 1-4 instead of 1,2,3,4

My problem is that the links to footnotes or endnotes in my word-documents
appear as separate numbers: 1,2,3,4. I would like to format them so they
appear as 1-4 without losing the links to number 2 and 3.
Is this possible in word 2000?
