how to get macro recorder to work with autoshapes?

I am trying to use autoshapes (flowchart) with the macro recorder. The
recorder cassette changes to a pointer when I am over the autoshapes or some
of the other tool menus. Does anyone know how to get this functionality?

Maybe I'm missing something obvious but what, exactly, can't you do? What
functionality is it that you want to get?
